Trevor Zegras' Game-Changing Trade to Flyers: From Ducks to New Heights in NHL (2026)

A fresh start has revitalized Flyers' Trevor Zegras

The transition to a new team has proven advantageous for Trevor Zegras. Drafted ninth overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2019, Zegras quickly emerged as one of the NHL's brightest young talents.

In his inaugural full NHL season (2021-22), Zegras showcased his prowess, tallying 23 goals and 61 points. He maintained this impressive form in the subsequent year, contributing 23 goals and 65 points.

Zegras' exceptional puck handling skills, including a lacrosse-style assist on Sonny Milano's goal in 2022, solidified his reputation.

His growing popularity culminated in his selection as the cover athlete for EA's NHL 23 video game, alongside women's hockey player Sarah Nurse.

However, injuries and inconsistency marred Zegras' tenure with the Ducks. In the 2023-24 season, he played in only 31 games, recording six goals and 15 points. The following season, he improved to 12 goals and 32 points in 57 games.

The Flyers acquired Zegras from the Ducks last off-season, trading forward Ryan Poehling and two draft picks. This move has rejuvenated his career, as he leads the team with nine goals and 25 points in 25 games. Zegras attributes his improved performance to a more mature approach to the game.

"I feel better than that guy," Zegras remarked, referring to his past self. "Not that he wasn't great, just different. I see the game differently now. I look for things I didn't notice before. Back then, I played more on adrenaline and the thrill of playing in the NHL. Now, there's a right way to play the game."

Zegras' positive transformation has not gone unnoticed by Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet, who is also in his first season with the team.

"When he's playing well, I give him space," Tocchet explained. "But I also want to provide feedback when he's doing well. I have specific expectations for him when he's on and off the ice."

Zegras appreciates Tocchet's coaching style, which emphasizes collaboration and trust. "He's someone you can listen to because he's lived it," Zegras said. "You can trust his advice, and it works. The team has thrived under his guidance this year."

The Flyers' roster also includes Jamie Drysdale, a defenseman who played with Zegras in Anaheim. Drysdale witnessed Zegras' highs and lows in Anaheim and now believes he's playing at his best.

"I think he's just having fun," Drysdale noted. "That's the essence of it. He's enjoying himself. I believe he's found his home here. The team is incredible. He's been a perfect fit, and when he's having fun and being creative, he'll excel and make a difference."
