Orioles Prospect Hype: Next Basallo or Wieters in 2026? (2026)

Curious about the next wave of excitement surrounding Orioles’ prospect promotions? In August, the Baltimore Orioles made headlines by promoting two highly touted prospects in quick succession: outfielder Dylan Beavers on August 16 and catcher Samuel Basallo just a day later. Such rapid-fire promotions of players with significant expectations are quite rare, making this moment particularly noteworthy.

According to MLB Pipeline, Beavers is ranked as the No. 3 prospect within the Orioles organization and holds the 83rd spot overall in Major League Baseball. Meanwhile, Basallo stands out as the top prospect in the system, also ranking seventh overall. Both players have retained their rookie eligibility for the 2026 season by not exceeding the limits of 45 days or 130 at-bats in previous seasons.

These promotional announcements were made while the Orioles were in Houston—a trip that was also highlighted by rookie Brandon Young’s remarkable performance in his 11th major league start, where he retired the first 23 batters he faced. What an unforgettable weekend it turned out to be!

Basallo’s promotion elicited an especially enthusiastic response from fans, reminiscent of the fervor surrounding the debuts of catchers Matt Wieters in 2009 and Adley Rutschman in 2022. In fact, the site traffic I experienced in 2009 peaked with a post about Wieters' lineup placement for his first game, reflecting just how eagerly fans anticipated his debut against the Tigers on May 29 at Camden Yards. He ended up batting seventh, nestled between Luke Scott and Nolan Reimold, but unfortunately went 0-for-4 that day.

In addition to Beavers and Basallo, fans have also been buzzing about infielders Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday, as well as outfielder Colton Cowser, prior to their promotions. This raises the question: will any player manage to generate similar excitement in 2026?

Outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr., who was selected as the 17th pick in the first round of the 2023 draft from Vanderbilt University, currently ranks as the No. 4 prospect in the organization. However, the general buzz around him seems comparatively muted. Perhaps this will change as the season progresses.

At just 24 years old, Bradfield reached Triple-A Norfolk last year, where he recorded a .179 batting average over 15 games. Despite this, his impressive speed is a standout trait—he successfully stole 36 bases out of 40 attempts across various levels, totaling an impressive 135 stolen bases in 154 attempts throughout his three minor league seasons. His on-base percentage reached .348 last year, though his overall batting line stood at .242 with a slugging percentage of .348.

Bradfield’s elite speed, graded at a remarkable 80, along with his defensive skills (with the exception of his arm strength), make him an intriguing player to watch. Although he only hit seven home runs in 891 plate appearances, his approach has earned him a notable .369 on-base percentage. In the Arizona Fall League, he batted .221 with a .341 on-base percentage, adding 17 steals in 18 attempts.

Fans can look forward to watching Bradfield’s development closely. He is often compared to the renowned Kenny Lofton, showcasing a unique skill set that differs from past Orioles prospects.

Currently, no other players in the top 10 prospects list seem poised to generate the same level of excitement as Basallo did this year. Catcher and outfielder Ike Irish, ranked as the No. 3 prospect and selected by the Orioles in the 2025 draft, is still too early in his development to draw significant attention just yet.

Similarly, shortstop Wehiwa Aloy, picked 31st overall last year, as well as pitcher Esteban Mejia (No. 6), outfielder Nate George (No. 7), and pitcher Boston Bateman (No. 8), are also considered a bit too soon for their moment in the spotlight.

Trey Gibson, ranked No. 9 and recognized as the Minor League Pitcher of the Year, is a candidate for a debut later this summer and could join Young and Cade Povich in the Tides’ rotation, depending on how the Orioles decide to structure their pitching staff.

What do you think? Will anyone step up to match the excitement generated by Basallo and Beavers? Share your thoughts and let’s dive into the discussion!
