A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken Washington, DC. A young member of the National Guard has died after a shocking daylight shooting in one of the capital’s busiest downtown areas — and the story behind it is already sparking national debate.
Twenty-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, who traveled from West Virginia to volunteer over Thanksgiving, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, President Donald Trump confirmed during a call with service members. “She was an extraordinary young woman, deeply respected and dedicated,” he said with visible sorrow. Her fellow guardsman, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, remains in critical condition.

Officials later revealed he arrived in the United States in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome — a special immigration program created to assist Afghan nationals after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. He applied for asylum in 2024, which was reportedly granted earlier this year.
Before Beckstrom’s death was confirmed, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated at a Thursday morning news conference that Lakanwal would face three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, as well as possession of a firearm during a violent crime. “We pray for their recovery,” Pirro said, “but let me be clear: if either of the victims dies, the charge will become first-degree murder.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi described Beckstrom’s death as “a devastating loss to the nation” and declared her intent to seek the death penalty. “This monster should never have been allowed into our country,” Bondi told Fox News, sparking immediate debate over immigration policies and national security screenings.
