A shadow has fallen over Mohammed Usman's fighting career. The heavyweight fighter is facing a significant setback after a recent announcement. Let's delve into the details of this situation.
On Friday, the Combat Sports Anti-Doping (CSAD) revealed that Usman has been handed a 30-month suspension. This comes as a result of a positive test for testosterone, a banned substance. This test was conducted prior to his scheduled bout against Valter Walker at UFC Rio on October 11th, which subsequently led to his withdrawal from the fight. Furthermore, Usman admitted to using BPC-157, another prohibited peptide, earlier in 2025. Consequently, Usman is now ineligible to compete until April 2028.
Usman, aged 36, has since addressed the situation through a public statement on Instagram. He acknowledged the testosterone use, calling it "a mistake." He stated that during his recovery, he made an error while trying to heal and takes full responsibility for his actions. He also mentioned that this period has allowed him to focus on his health, family, and life in general.
But here's where it gets controversial... Usman has refrained from commenting on his future in fighting. He expressed his commitment to taking things one day at a time and focusing on personal growth.
Usman, who is the younger brother of former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, currently holds a 4-2 record in the UFC and an overall professional record of 11-4. He won the heavyweight title on the 30th season of The Ultimate Fighter and followed up with two consecutive victories in the UFC. After facing losses to Mick Parkin and Thomas Petersen, Usman returned to winning form with a victory over Hamdy Abdelwahab at UFC Baku in June.
Here is Usman's unedited statement:
"I want to address my suspension. During my recovery, I made a mistake while trying to heal, and I take full responsibility for it. This time has allowed me to get my health back, focus on my family, and gain a deeper appreciation for life. I have breath in my lungs, life, and I’m truly blessed. I’m taking things one day at a time and staying committed to growth and doing things the right way. I’m grateful to the UFC, Rashad, Ali, and Brian and all my coaches for their continued support. We move forward. 🔐🇳🇬"
