IPL 2025: Big Names Released as Teams Prepare for Mini Auction (2026)

Big-name player cuts are shaking up the IPL mini-auction, potentially reshaping team rosters for the upcoming season!

The Kolkata Knight Riders have made some of the most eye-catching decisions leading up to the IPL mini-auction, starting with letting go of star all-rounder Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer from their IPL 2025 squad. Russell's departure marks the conclusion of his lengthy and impactful career with the West Indian powerhouse, while Iyer, who was their priciest acquisition at INR 23.75 crore during last year's massive Jeddah auction, is also out. To help beginners understand, think of these releases as freeing up financial resources and spots for international players, which are crucial in cricket tournaments like the IPL where teams have limits on overseas talent.

KKR also cleared space by releasing Quinton de Kock, Anrich Nortje, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Moeen Ali, and Spencer Johnson. Additionally, they traded Mayank Markande to Mumbai Indians and let go of Chetan Sakariya and Luvnith Sisodia. This strategy has empowered the three-time IPL winners to approach the auction with a robust INR 64.3 crore budget and 13 open positions, including six for overseas players.

Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings, who were active in the trading phase, made several significant releases, giving them the second-largest purse at INR 43.4 crore. Following the notable trades of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, they released Matheesha Pathirana and the New Zealand duo of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. Other big names like Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, and Vijay Shankar were also among those shown the door. CSK now has up to nine spots to fill, with four dedicated to overseas talent. For context, releasing players like this helps teams manage their salary cap, which is like a financial ceiling that ensures fairness in spending across the league.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, with INR 25.5 crore available, rank third in purse size after dropping eight players. Their most prominent move was trading Mohammed Shami to Lucknow Super Giants, followed by releases of Adam Zampa, Abhinav Manohar, Rahul Chahar, and Wiaan Mulder, among others. This approach allows SRH to scout for fresh talent that could boost their performance in key areas like bowling or batting.

Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals secured purses of INR 22.9 crore and INR 21.8 crore respectively through their own releases. LSG bid farewell to eight players, including trading Shardul Thakur and letting go of David Miller, Akash Deep, Ravi Bishnoi, and Shamar Joseph. DC's seven releases were led by Faf du Plessis and Mohit Sharma, plus Jake Fraser-McGurk and Donovan Ferreira, who was traded to Rajasthan Royals. Interestingly, DC retained faith in their INR 10.75 crore investment, T Natarajan, even though he only played in two matches last season—raising questions about loyalty versus performance metrics in team decisions.

But here's where it gets controversial...

First-time IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended up with INR 16.4 crore after releasing eight players, such as Liam Livingstone, Tim Seifert, Lungi Ngidi, and Mayank Agarwal. They now have eight spots open, including two overseas, setting the stage for potential game-changers at the auction.

Rajasthan Royals, after trading Sanju Samson to CSK and Nitish Rana to DC, also released the Sri Lankan spin twins Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana. Other departures included Kunal Singh Rathore, Akash Madhwal, Ashok Sharma, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Kumar Kartikeya. RR now holds INR 16.05 crore with nine spots available, one of which is for an overseas player.

Former champions Gujarat Titans, besides trading Sherfane Rutherford to Mumbai Indians, released Gerald Coetzee, Dasun Shanaka, Mahipal Lomror, Karim Janat, and Kulwant Khejroliya. This leaves them with INR 12.9 crore and five spots, four for overseas talent. Punjab Kings, the IPL 2025 runners-up, bid goodbye to Josh Inglis and Glenn Maxwell, along with Aaron Hardie, Kuldeep Sen, and Praveen Dubey, securing INR 11.5 crore and four spots, two overseas.

And this is the part most people miss: the strategic depth of these moves, which could lead to unexpected comebacks or flops.

Mumbai Indians, who brought in Rutherford, Thakur, and Markande via trades, released nine players overall. Notable exits included Satyanaryana Raju and Vignesh Puthur, who had some standout performances in the 2025 season, as well as Reece Topley, Bevon Jacobs, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Lizaad Williams, Karn Sharma, KL Shrijith, and Arjun Tendulkar, traded to LSG. They enter with the smallest purse at INR 2.75 crore and five spots, one overseas—highlighting a tight budget that might force clever, low-cost picks.

Interestingly, CSK boosted their purse by releasing Pathirana, a move that exemplifies how releasing emerging talents can free up funds for bigger stars. For beginners, it's worth noting that these auctions are like high-stakes shopping sprees where teams bid for players, and a larger purse gives more flexibility to attract top talent.
