EnBW, a leading energy provider in Germany, has embarked on an ambitious project to enhance its charging infrastructure. The company has initiated field tests of XCharge charging stations, marking a significant step towards a more resilient and diverse fast-charging network. The test involves ten XCharge charging stations, including three new locations in Rutesheim, Durlach Centre in Karlsruhe, and Karlsruhe Railway Station, in addition to the EnBW City site in Stuttgart. This expansion is part of EnBW's 'HyperNetz', a comprehensive network of fast-charging stations. Until now, EnBW has primarily used DC charging stations from Alpitronic, but the introduction of XCharge stations signifies a shift towards a more varied and potentially more robust charging ecosystem.
XCharge, a company with Chinese origins, has established a dual headquarters in Hamburg and Austin to manage its international operations. The company offers a range of fast-charging products, including a battery-supported high-power charger (HPC). EnBW has chosen the XCharge C7 Ultra-Fast Charger, which delivers up to 400 kW of charging power, similar to the Hypercharger HYC400. This decision is part of EnBW's strategy to test and evaluate various charging station and software options from different manufacturers.
Volker Rimpler, Chief Technology Officer for E-Mobility at EnBW, explains that the company's goal is to 'strengthen the resilience of the fast-charging network and reduce dependence on individual suppliers'. He emphasizes that relying on a single supplier carries risks, especially in times of global uncertainties and supply chain challenges. EnBW's approach is to continuously monitor supplier markets and test promising technologies to ensure the resilience and economic viability of its supply chains.
