Dr. M's Claims: Muhyiddin's Credibility in Question (2026)

Muhyiddin’s credibility is now at stake after Dr Mahathir’s allegations, according to an analyst. The debate has shifted from evaluating government performance to questions of personal trust.

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin faces damage to his political credibility even if the claims that party funds were stolen and kept at his home, as alleged by Mahathir, are proven false. Political analyst Awang Azman Awang Pawi notes that in politics, repeated claims and public perception can outweigh factual accuracy. The scandal could rekindle doubts about Muhyiddin’s leadership within the opposition and potentially erode support among undecided Malay voters, regardless of the video’s authenticity.

"This is now about personal trust rather than governance," Awang Azman remarks.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara adds that the allegations touch on money and trust, making the timing and motivation of Mahathir’s resurfaced accusations worth questioning. He points out that both figures are in the opposition, and such disclosures could undermine unity at a moment when Perikatan Nasional (PN) aims to solidify its grassroots support. The ongoing focus on party funds may weaken Muhyiddin in the long term, especially as PN chairman and a potential prime minister candidate.

Muhyiddin has denied the claims. A short video clip circulating online shows Mahathir alleging Muhyiddin stole party funds and stored them at home, while also suggesting Muhyiddin’s bid for the prime minister’s post is a strategy to avoid imprisonment. Johor Bersatu Youth chief Alias Rasman dismissed the video as edited for political gain and said legal action would follow against those responsible.

The rift between Mahathir and Muhyiddin traces back to the 2020 Sheraton Move, which toppled the Pakatan Harapan government and propelled Muhyiddin into the premiership. In recent times, however, they have shown more cordial relations, with Muhyiddin often deferring to Mahathir's views.

Muhyiddin has been contacted for comment. Shamsul Amri Baharuddin of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia suggests the issue is unlikely to sway voters, labeling it an elite-level matter that will circulate among politicians and educated circles rather than resonate with the general public, who may be tired of political theatrics. He also notes that Mahathir’s influence has diminished; while political actors may still listen, they are unlikely to take his statements at face value.

Would you agree that personal trust issues can undermine a political figure even without proven wrongdoing, or should perceptions only matter if accompanied by verified facts? Share your thoughts in the comments.
