In a surprising move that has caught the attention of baseball fans everywhere, the Arizona Diamondbacks have successfully negotiated a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals to bring in Nolan Arenado, a third baseman renowned for his impressive eight All-Star selections. As part of this significant exchange, the D-backs sent minor league pitcher Jack Martinez to the Cardinals, who are also contributing a substantial $31 million to help balance the financial aspects of the deal.
Nolan Arenado, a player celebrated not only for his batting prowess but also for his exceptional defensive skills—evidenced by his ten Gold Glove awards—has been a key player for the Cardinals over the past five seasons. However, following the 2024 season, the Cardinals, now focused on rebuilding their team, made the decision to shop Arenado around the league. While he may not be the offensive powerhouse he once was, his experience and leadership will be invaluable to the Diamondbacks, especially after they traded away star hitter Eugenio Suárez to the Seattle Mariners at last season's trade deadline.
Last season, Arenado recorded a batting average of .237, complemented by 12 home runs and 52 RBIs. He still has two years remaining on a lucrative contract worth a total of $275 million over nine years, which translates to $42 million owed to him in the coming years—$27 million due this year and $15 million in 2027. To sweeten the deal for the Diamondbacks, the Cardinals have agreed to send $22 million to Arizona, distributed as monthly payments of $2,666,666.67 from April through September of this year, and an additional $9 million scheduled for November 1, 2027.
Notably, Arenado accepted the trade by waiving a no-trade clause, demonstrating his willingness to embrace this new chapter in his career.
