Viewers Frustrated as CBS Station in Syracuse Faces Technical Turbulence After Major Channel Change
Something unusual is happening on Central New York’s television screens, and it’s leaving many viewers puzzled—and a bit annoyed. CBS fans in the Syracuse area suddenly found themselves staring at black screens or incorrect program guides this week, all because of a planned—but rocky—change to one of the region’s oldest TV stations. On Monday, December 1, CNY Central’s CBS affiliate—formerly known as WTVH—officially changed its call letters to WKOF CBS 5. The move also came with a shift in the station’s channel position. According to CNY Central, the update was supposed to happen seamlessly, especially for viewers using cable, satellite, or popular streaming services such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling, or DirecTV Stream.
Yet reality has been quite different for some. Within hours of the switch, complaints began appearing online. CNY Central acknowledged that a number of viewers were struggling to locate or watch the new WKOF signal, even though the change had been in the works for weeks.
On Verizon FiOS, things got confusing fast. Subscribers could see the CBS picture, but their on-screen program guides displayed incorrect information. One frustrated customer told syracuse.com that two hours on the phone with Verizon support still didn’t solve the issue. Over on Spectrum, customer instructions were to tune in to channels 2 or 1256, but many could only find a black screen—or discovered CBS shows airing instead on channel 1211. “They said everything would be seamless,” one Spectrum viewer complained, “but that hasn’t been our experience at all.”
Meanwhile, CNY Central reported that some other distributors were working properly, though many still hadn’t updated their on-screen listings by Monday afternoon.
For viewers tuning in through antennas, the fix is easy but essential: re-scan your channels. WKOF now carries CBS programming on digital channel 15.1. The old WTVH channel 5.1 now broadcasts content from Roar, another Sinclair-owned network.
Speaking of Sinclair Broadcast Group—the company operating CNY Central’s NBC 3 (WSTM), CW 6 (WSTQ), and CBS 5—the decision to change the Syracuse CBS station’s call letters hasn’t been fully explained. Interestingly, Sinclair made a nearly identical move in Nevada the same day, switching its NBC affiliate from KRNV to NRXI. Could there be a broader strategy behind these mysterious rebrandings?
Roar, the network replacing CBS on the former WTVH channel, originally launched in 2016 under the name TBD. It features a mix of viral video shows, comedy clip series, and reruns from classics like “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and “Saturday Night Live.”
For those who still can’t access CBS the traditional way, there are workarounds. Streaming services such as Fubo TV, DirecTV Stream, and Hulu + Live TV continue providing CBS programming without interruption.
CNY Central stated that all its distribution partners were notified about the call letter and channel modifications weeks in advance. The broadcaster added that its engineering teams are working quickly to correct signal issues and update every program guide as soon as possible. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused,” the company said in an official statement.
Updates, the station promised, will continue appearing on its website as fixes roll out.
It’s worth noting that WTVH holds a special place in Syracuse history—it was the city’s very first TV station when it debuted as WHEN-TV back in December of 1948. Now, nearly eight decades later, it faces one of its most disruptive identity changes yet.
