Blue Boxes Update: Petrolia's Recycling Program Transition (2025)

Get ready, Petrolia residents – a recycling revolution is coming your way! By the end of November, those familiar blue boxes will be making a comeback, but with a twist that’s got everyone talking. As Ontario rolls out its new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Blue Box Program, Petrolia is switching gears in a big way. But here’s where it gets interesting: starting January 1, 2026, Emterra will take over recycling collection from Waste Management, marking a significant shift in how we handle our recyclables.

Each household will receive two brand-new 80-litre blue boxes from Emterra, replacing the rolling bins with yellow lids that have become a staple in many driveways. And this is the part most people miss: those yellow-lidded bins? They’re actually owned by Waste Management, who will collect them in the new year. So, no need to worry about what to do with them – they’re not yours to keep!

Here’s the deal: this change only affects recycling containers. For waste collection, residents will still use the rolling bins with green lids, so no need to overhaul your entire system. But here’s the controversial bit: while residential recycling shifts to Emterra, commercial properties will stick with Waste Management for their recycling needs. Why the split? It’s all part of the province’s plan to standardize recycling practices and fund the program through Canadian producers who supply packaging and paper materials to Ontario consumers.

Petrolia, along with several other Ontario municipalities, has been out of the recycling collection game since January 1, 2024, leaving it to the province to oversee. According to Town of Petrolia CAO and Treasurer Rick Charlebois, this shift has its perks: standardized recycling rules and funding from producers mean less confusion and more accountability. But is this the best way forward? Some argue that local control is lost, while others applaud the streamlined approach. What do you think?

For now, residents will continue using their current bins until December 31. Want to dive deeper into the changes? Check out Circular Materials’ website for all the details. And don’t forget to ask yourself: Is this new system a step forward, or are we trading local control for provincial oversight?
