Tired of buffering during your favorite shows or lag spikes ruining your gaming sessions? AT&T is rolling out a new AI-powered feature called Wi-Fi Personalization, designed to optimize your home internet experience. This innovative technology promises to intelligently prioritize your internet traffic, potentially boosting performance where you need it most: gaming, streaming, and video conferencing. It's a game-changer for 'converged' AT&T customers – those who subscribe to both home fiber and mobile services – as well as those with All-Fi Pro plans.
"We're focused on the details of Wi-Fi performance, and we wanted to see how we could take Wi-Fi to the next level," explained Josh Goodell, AT&T's vice president of broadband and converged product management.
So, how does it work? Wi-Fi Personalization analyzes your internet usage patterns throughout the day, identifying which types of traffic are most crucial at different times. For instance, it might prioritize video calls during the day and gaming late at night. "It learns the rhythm of the network and will become more performant over time," Goodell stated.
But here's where it gets interesting... The system prioritizes traffic at the application level, which is a departure from how many home network devices typically manage data based on the device itself. Imagine you're streaming Netflix on your TV and iPad; the system recognizes this as video streaming and prioritizes it over other less time-sensitive activities.
This feature is software-based and is being automatically activated on AT&T Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6 gateways. However, it's important to note that it only works with equipment provided by AT&T. If you use your own Wi-Fi system, like an Eero or TP-Link router, you won't be able to access this feature.
And this is the part most people miss... Wi-Fi Personalization is offered at no additional cost. However, the fact that it analyzes your internet traffic inevitably raises privacy concerns.
Goodell assures that the AI processing occurs solely on the Wi-Fi gateway, and your personal data doesn't leave your home network. AT&T also claims it never sees your specific content. "We have no desire to monetize any data as part of this. This is all about improving performance," he emphasized, highlighting the company's commitment to customer privacy.
While the feature is enabled automatically, you still have control. The AT&T Smart Home Manager app allows you to pause the feature or manually prioritize specific types of traffic. For example, if you're hosting a college football watch party, you can manually prioritize streaming to ensure a seamless viewing experience.
Goodell mentioned that AT&T's gateways already scan traffic 500 million times a day. The AI analyzes historical patterns, rather than adjusting traffic in real-time based on demand.
