AFRICOM Commander's Africa Tour: Countering Terrorism in Ethiopia, Somaliland, and Puntland (2026)

The Commander's African Mission: A Critical Visit to Ethiopia, Somaliland, and Puntland

In a significant diplomatic move, General Dagvin Anderson, the Commander of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), has embarked on a series of high-level visits to African nations, starting with Ethiopia and the Somali regions of Somaliland and Puntland. This trip, which began on December 2, 2025, is a strategic initiative aligned with President Trump's priorities and guided by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

But here's where it gets controversial...

AFRICOM's statement emphasized the "maximum pressure" strategy against extremist groups like ISIS and al-Shabaab. General Anderson's mission is to reinforce Washington's commitment to counterterrorism operations across Africa, with a particular focus on protecting U.S. interests and homeland security.

"We share a common enemy," Anderson stated. "I've been engaged with this region for a while, and I understand the challenges. We're here to unite and empower African partners to tackle these threats together."

During his visit, Anderson met with key government officials to discuss a "laser-focused" approach to terrorism. In Ethiopia, he conferred with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Field Marshal Birhanu Jula Gelelcha, the Chief of Defense, to address the growing ISIS and al-Shabaab threat.

In Somaliland, Anderson held meetings with President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, Brigadier General Niman Yusuf Osman, and Admiral Ahmed Hurre Hariye, discussing security measures and assessing the port city of Berbera.

And this is the part most people miss...

Puntland, Anderson's final stop, is a critical region in the fight against terrorism. He met with Vice President Ilyas Osman Lugatoor and General Adan Abdi Hashi, praising Puntland's efforts against ISIS in the Golis Mountains but urging intensified operations.

Across all engagements, Anderson emphasized the shared responsibility in countering extremist groups. He reaffirmed the U.S.'s commitment to supporting African partner forces making measurable progress.

"As we navigate the complex security landscape, with rising terrorist activities in East Africa, the Sahel, and West Africa's coastal regions, collective efforts are paramount. Together, we can secure a brighter future for our nations and, most importantly, for our future generations," Anderson concluded.

AFRICOM's assessment underscores the critical role of Africa in global security. It's a complex and evolving theater, where challenges extend beyond the continent, impacting European and global stability, including U.S. security.
